I don’t hike this trail as often when I visit Juneau because I usually opt to hike to the top of the Mt Roberts tram. But the tram wasn’t open for the season yet, so I wouldn’t have the option of taking it back down the mountain (which I don’t usually do anyway, but psychologically I like having the option). It’s day two, our first full day which we will spend at sea enjoying some frigid temps, April showers, and large-ish swells (it’s ALWAYS a good time to cruise to Alaska as far as I’m concerned, but some jet lagged grumpy pants seem to disagree). Cruise.” I retired after 10 years as a college professor to pursue my passion for cruising, moving across the country to Seattle where I now live downtown and within a five minute walk of the NCL cruise terminal at Pier 66. I’ve cruised there so many times locals now wave to me, ask me to take in their mail when they travel, and flag me down to see if they can borrow a cup of sugar to which I reply, “you know I don’t actually live here, right? ” I’ve cruised to Alaska dozens and dozens of times on nearly every cruise line and itinerary.

For cruisers wanting to try an Alaskan itinerary, there are several seven day options. Sailing from Seattle gives cruisers more convenient and less expensive flight options as compared to other departure ports. Watch out wolf, you’ve got competition from the Bliss whenit comes to being big and bad. Average-sized cruise ships hug the shoreline, hoping to blend in so theBliss won’t swallow them up and spit them back out into the ocean along withthe pulverized organic waste destined to become fish food. Anyway, I walked through downtown for research purposes (I’m working on an article for the blog about Alaska cruising in April) and then headed out for today’s hike on the Perseverance Trail.
A Few (Honest) Thoughts on the Bliss to Alaska

Experience wildlife, wilderness, and native culture on this Alaska cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL). Visit Seattle, Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay, Ketchikan, Victoria, Seattle.
I stayed in a $2,554 studio cabin on NCL Epic, and it was one of the best sailing experiences I ever had
In fact, on my first cruise on the Bliss with my son, we stayed onboard for the majority of our time in port and practically had the entire ship to ourselves. That’s when the Bliss is really fun and you can fully appreciate all she has to offer! Norwegian Cruise Line's (NCL) Alaskan cruises typically range from seven to nine days, showcasing the breathtaking beauty of Alaska's landscapes. Cruises sail past iconic sights such as Glacier Bay, the Inside Passage, and the Hubbard Glacier. Ports of call include Alaskan favorites like Skagway, Ketchikan, and Juneau, offering guests opportunities to explore the rich local history and culture. Norwegian provides a variety of shore excursion options, from adventurous activities to wildlife viewing, making each day a new journey into Alaska's heart.

Also, popular ship activities will be very crowded on your two sea days. If that doesn’t bother you and you decide to book for Alaska, be sure to reserve your preferred dining venues and ship activities as early as possible, because everything fills up fast. Silversea has “Door-to-Door” pricing on many of its Alaska cruises, meaning the cruise fare includes airfare, hotels, and all transfers—including transfers from home to the departure airport. Onboard the all-suite ships, there’s butler service in every suite, fine dining, and select shore excursions included. The largest Silversea ship sailing to Alaska also carries just under 600 guests, allowing for port calls at lesser-visited stops like Wrangell, Haines, and Valdez.
I’ve regretted prioritizing my kid’s happiness over that cornbread ever since. So I was NOT going to miss it tonight even though we were scheduled to cruise through the Endicott Arm fjord during dinner. It was so quiet in the dining room it was like being in church and let me tell you, that cornbread was a religious experience. Some may be wondering why I cruise to Alaska so often and why I’d want to do the exact same thing two cruises in a row. It’s always magical, ethereal, with so many lessons to teach me. And it’s never, never the same.
Enjoy a ride on an Alaskan railway, go sightseeing, enjoy some locally caught fish, or even have the opportunity to hug a husky puppy—something for everyone. Ships like the Norwegian Bliss were built to sail to Alaska, with 180 degree observation venues to take in the region's native species, such as killer whales and eagles, or scenic cruising of glaciers such as Dawes Glacier and Glacier Bay. Lucky cruisers may even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights in the evening.

The third takes you to all the dining menus (MDR, specialty, fast casual, room service, and more) I collected onboard. As always, feel free to ask questions or share your own experiences on the Bliss to the comments. And while there’s a ton to do for those not content to relax and eat for 168 hours straight (me), it’s not ideal for anyone looking for a more serene experience. I also hesitate in recommending it for the 7-day Alaska itinerary from Seattle (even though I’ve done it twice myself), especially for those who haven’t cruised to Alaska before.
They probably contain more pee than water on sea days, but you’ll be totally in charge of how much pee is in them on port days while everyone else is off the ship. Even though the Perseverance Trail is part of a trail system I discovered a few years ago within walking distance of Ward Cove (where NCL ships dock outside of Ketchikan), the name has so far discouraged me. When I think “perseverance” I think of some self help nonsense promising mental strength as a result of physical or psychological pain with no certain outcome. On my last NCL cruise (to Antarctica/South America in December) I missed skillet cornbread night in the MDR because it was my son’s birthday and he wanted to celebrate at Teppanyaki.

It offers a wide variety of cruising options, including 9, 10 and 11 day sailings. The ship has some of the most unique itineraries, including a visit to Hawaii, providing for a once in a lifetime vacation. With add-on land tours, there is lots of opportunity to explore Alaska, with a number of fantastic itinerary options. If you’re fortunate, as I am, to have visited Alaska many times, the Bliss is awesome on port days when most passengers are off the ship.
