Although this French Gothic mansion was built in 1910, the rich history of the Glidden House has been reincarnated as a Cleveland boutique hotel and a top wedding venue. This stately historic home will serve as the perfect backdrop for picturesque weddings, receptions and other events that warrant the grand splendor of the Glidden House.
The concept of prefabrication showed early promise with the Case Study Houses Program in Los Angeles during the 1950s, but progress stalled. Another take on the idea, Eichler tract houses, brought contemporary architecture to a mass market between the late 1940s and the early 1970s, but they were assembled on-site. But the 1,344-square-foot two-bedroom, two-bath house is no barebones Model T—it’s more like a Prius hybrid. It arrived nearly complete, down to the lightweight composite concrete countertops, slate tile backsplash, birch veneer built-in cabinetry, bathroom vanities, bamboo floor, and paint. The Glidden House was built to serve as the family's main residence.

It has been a source of mystery and chatter since its construction in 1926. The enigmatic Sowden House is an anomaly on otherwise charming and SoCal-bright Franklin Avenue in Los Feliz. All wood-to-wood joints were caulked to make the house airtight. The master suite, guest room, and guest bath are located in the other module. Big, rectangular wood screens on barn-door tracks slide across the windows of both modules to create shade and privacy without completely blocking natural light. The kitchen and living/dining area occupy one module, which stays bright and airy thanks to a wall of sliding glass doors.

Located just 16 miles from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, it is an accessible escape into a world where the past and present blend beautifully. The location was perfect, close to the art museums and botanical garden. Having hot water for tea and coffee available at all times was great since it was a little chilly when we visited. It was a nice neighborhood to walk around in and was easy to navigate by car. Enjoy our unique, professional, and historic venue for your next corporate event, meeting or business retreat.
